Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang Film Trailer Review
Based from the title of this Star Cinema horror film, Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang tries to tell the story of the very first aswang. For those who still don't know what an aswang is; The Aswang is a mythical creature in Philippine folklore which shapeshifts into different kinds of animals mainly a pig, dog, cat, bird or a human-hybrid of the said animals. By daytime, the aswangs appear as elusive and shy human beings but come nightfall and they transform to such monstrosities that preys on unborn fetuses and small children. This is probably the first time that a Filipino film tries to explore the origins of the mythical creature Aswang.
I think the concept is fresh for a Filipino horror film. We have so many horror films in the past that uses the myth of Aswang, but never goes back to retell it. Well, at least not that I am aware of. According to a rumor, the film was completed at around November of 2011 and so they have all the time to polish and edit this film. Hopefully there is some effective writing that goes with this film. some may complain about the Aswang's wild boar head design, but I'll still give it the benefit of doubt. I prefer practical effects and convincing make up for monster designs than completely depending on CGI-effects. Hopefully it perfectly combines both. Call me optimistic, but I have high hopes for this film. I haven't see any horror films recently that scared the hell out of me. Hopefully this film can.
