Litrato Film Trailer Review

Litrato 2023 Filipino film story by Louie Ignaci, screenplay by Ralston Jover, produced by 316 Media Network starring Ai-Ai delas Alas, Liza Lorena, and Bodjie Pascua

What can be said about the Litrato (2023) official movie trailer? Litrato seems to be another promising family drama film with a dash of comedy as hinted in the trailer with the seemingly unlikeable protagonist (Ai-Ai delas Alas). It makes you wonder as to where is that memorable photograph Ai-Ai's senile elderly character's daughter and grand-daughter is and what happened to her beloved family. The film doesn't seem to focus on the dementia aspect like most of its contemporaries do when using the elderly as the central character. The film has an all-star cast of noteworthy seasoned actors and actresses, with some fresh faces like Quinn Carillo. Who is and where are the remaining family members of Ai-Ai's character? Those questions are what will drive interest for the film besides its cast and superb performance.
Litrato 2023 Filipino film starring Quinn Carillo as a caregiver to Ai-Ai delas Alas elderly character

I am going on a tangent here but is still relevant to Filipino films in general. There should be more aggresive marketing and detailed press release for Filipino films. I have to really dig deep within the 316 Media Network's official Facebook Page to find the Litrato (2023) official movie poster which then cite the story, screenplay and other critical details of the film. Beyond a critically acclaimed director (Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio), I genuinely believe that story and screenplay writers should also be mentioned in the same breath, along with the actors. This is why I always make it to a point to scrounge up details to complete the information behind a particular film. Writers are crucial and can make or break a film. Litrato is a story by Louie Ignacio (the film's actual director) with screenplay by Ralston Jover. It also wouldn't hurt, if the marketing team can cite some plot or synopsis to give us an idea on who or what to expect in the film. All in all, Litrato is a promising Filipino family film that I would encourage people to consider watching when it hits theaters on the 26th of July.

Our Mighty Yaya Film Trailer Review

Our Mighty Yaya 2017 Regal Films family comedy movie featuring Ai-Ai Delas Alas, Lucas Magallano, and Alyson McBride

What can be said about Our Mighty Yaya (2017) official movie trailer? Well, it is your typical light-hearted family film focusing on an exemplary nanny for children belonging to an uptight high class family. But of course, to emphasize the uniqueness of this role model of a nanny, they have to make her look ghoulish by making her skin tone darker, an improper set of teeth, and lacking the necessary education... everything of what you can expect from your stereotypical nanny figure from the province (caricature for comedic effect because why not). Well the only difference is that it is not mainly a dramatic film but don't misinterpret it as so as most of these kinds of film will have its fair share of moments that will thug on the heartstrings as what is expected of movies under this theme. The film will join the ranks of other nanny-themed titles like Anak (2000), Inang Yaya (2006), Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie (2009), and the internationally screened and acclaimed "Ilo Ilo" (2013).

Our Mighty Yaya 2017 comedy film showing on May 10, 2017 directed by Jose Javier Reyes starring Ai-Ai Delas Alas and Beverly Salviejo as nannies in this family film

Initially, I thought that there would be more of this film under this theme (the exemplary nanny stories), but to my surprise only a few came from my basic search; that this genre of (family) drama was done to death just like the rich guy-poor girl or rich girl-poor guy romantic films. Or maybe that is just that, many of the films that we have seen usually from romance and horror have these basic stereotype. Or maybe ABS-CBN's popular "Please Be Careful With My Heart" television series has grown on everyone. Well at least that daytime soap didn't had the audacity to stereotype the nannies as uneducated ghoulish looking one. Maybe, most of those belonging to the middle class, and upper class grew up with nannies and can entirely relate to this theme. Even if they belong to the lower class, if they themselves are a nanny or their family member is an actual nanny, maybe this is what makes it relatable to them. The question is do the ugly nanny with a heart of gold makes for an interesting and entertaining film? Well, that is what might (or might not) be answered on Our Mighty Yaya. We'll make sure to observe and make a criticism of that as the years past by or if the local film studios decides to start milking such themes as from what we have seen so far they "mostly have been on the look out to revolutionize" film making in the Philippines..

Northern Lights A Journey to Love (2017) Star Cinema romantic drama and family film featuring Piolo Pascual and Yen Santos love team

What can be said about Northern Lights: A Journey To Love (2017) official movie trailer? First off the film looks visually stunning and I think this is what is to be expected in one of the most prominent (if not the number one) film production company in the Philippines. But of course, the film's competency and watchability doesn't end up in cinematography alone. The question now is if whether Star Cinema's March 2017 film featuring Piolo Pascual any good? Well, the answer can only be known once you guys check it in theaters but from what we can make up from the trailer... it's probably decent. The film will join the ranks of other Star Cinema's films that has been majorly shot overseas/abroad like Milan, Barcelona, and Dubai.

Northern Lights A Journey to Love (2017) Star Cinema film starring Piolo Pascual, Yen Santos, and Raikko Mateo about a father winning his estranged son's heart and finding love with a heartbroken girl in alaska

So how does Northern Lights: A Journey To Love differ from the tens and thousands of romantic (romantic-comedy) films that Star Cinema has been "efficiently" producing as of recent memory? The answer is to add some real life element to it and that is in the form of estranged familial relationships. While having a care-free father winning over the hearts of his estranged son could have already been enough as a main driving plot, Star Cinema (or its writers) decides to go the romantic route and mix the unnecessary romantic interest (because, by the gods, you can't make a "good" Star Cinema film without romance). But it is what it is and the film's main theme seems to revolve around second chances and starting over again ergo mixing the estranged son and the heartbroken woman seems to be a perfect fit (?) (if you apply logic to it).

Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers is the tenth movie installment based on the late 80's television sitcom Okay Ka, Fairy Ko! which also stars Vic Sotto in the titular role of Enteng Kabisote the courageous human who married a fairy princess. The last film that featured Enteng Kabisote was the Spin-off and crossover film "Si Agimat, si Enteng Kabisote at si Ako" back in 2012. What can be said about Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers official movie trailer? Well, if you have been existing long enough and have been following the Philippine movie scene, you know exactly what to expect from Vic Sotto's Enteng Kabisote film franchise. Whether that be a good or bad thing and whether you like it or not, Enteng Kabisote is here to stay... or at least his descendants or if they decide the reboot the entire franchise, because... why NOT? This is the "big" movie for the EB Dabarkads, an Eat Bulaga December movie of sort, just like how the longest running Filipino noontime variety show makes a series of annual drama one-shots during the Lenten season. Oh and let me address one obvious criticism in this movie trailer besides Vic Sotto being too old fro this film franchise, yes it unapologetically parodies Hollywood blockbuster success Iron Man and the Avengers. Oh and there is the Lolas and the AlDub/MaiDen love team for the Eat Bulaga Dabarkads (who love them).

Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers 2016 fantasy comedy film featuring the Eat Bulaga Love Team Aldub - MaiDen Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza

Did you know that Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers is the first Enteng Kabisote film (from the longf line of "Okay Ka, Fairy Ko!" film series) that will not be featured in the Metro Manila Film Festival? This is due to the now "improved" (?) and "higher qualifications" said to be applied and adapted by the people behind the annual mainstream holiday season Filipino film festival after a series of negative criticism hurled towards it. Vic Sotto's "Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers" has met the exact same faith as its usual rival from the competing network (ABS-CBN) in the annual film festival, The Super Parental Guardians. Just like how the two entries usually clashed with one another in past Metro Manila Film festival (and their Filipino noontime show counterparts, GMA Network's Eat Bulaga vs ABS-CBN's It's Showtime); the average Filipino movie going fans will once again be thrown in the collision of these two "great" forces clashing on the big screen.

The Super Parental Guardians Film Trailer Review

The Super Parental Guardians 2016 Pinoy comedy from Star Cinema featuring Coco Martin, Vice Ganda, Onyok Pineda, and Awra Briguela Bb Joyce Bernal film

What can be said about The Super Parental Guardians official movie trailer? Well, it is definitely a Vice Ganda movie. After the tragedy that befell the Kapamilya Network's star comedian (the passing of Vice' friend and usual director on his film projects, the late-Wenn Deramas earlier within 2016), there has been a hiatus on films that features Vice Ganda. Guess, the world has to eventually move on and Vice is once again back with his usual brand of "family-friendly" gay humor. Whether it works for you or not, it is here to stay and will be another blockbuster.

The Super Parental Guardians 2016 Vice Ganda Comedy film after Wenn Deramas loud gay comedy stereotype Vice Ganda brand of humor

A little fact about the movie, The Super Parental Guardians was supposedly and maybe expected to be an official entry to the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival as it was submitted before the official deadline of submission for entries but "unfortunately" it was not selected as part of the official entries to the 42nd Metro Manila Film Festival this December 2016. The Super Parental Guardians will join the ranks of Our Mighty Yaya (Ai-Ai delas Alas), Mano Po 7: Tsinoy (Richard Yap), and Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers (Vic Sotto) that didn't made the cut due to the now "improved" (?) criteria imposed for entries. The Metro Manila Film Festival have been heavily criticized in the past for having overall low quality in terms of story and various technical aspects, now along with the new President this 2016, change also came to the MMFF.

The Super Parental Guardians 2016 Star Cinema comedy film featuring child actors Onyok Pineda and Awra Briguela directed by Bb Joyce Bernal Vice Ganda film 2016

It is usually an automatic blockbuster success if there is an entry featuring either Vice Ganda or Vic Sotto, but this time removing the entries from these two will finally make things interesting. Unfortunately there was a romantic comedy which is usually in the same league in terms of blockbuster success as the two, hopefully movie goers will find a new appreciation for other MMFF entries on the list besides the generic romantic comedies. What else is there to talk about with The Super Parental Guardians that has not been showed in the trailer. It is a chalk full of pop culture reference and features a larger than life and over the top characters—mainly Vice Ganda and even the child actors are also made this way—to act like the bratty effeminate caricature of the loud gay stereotype popularize in film nowadays. If Vice Ganda is your cup of tea, then there will be no stopping you from appreciating it whether The Super Parental Guardians is an official MMFF entry or not.

Everything about Her 2016 Star cinema drama featuring Xian Lim as Albert, the neglected Son by Vilma Santos

What can be said about the Everything about HHer official movie trailer? I can say that this film feels familiar but I just can't pinpoint how exactly? Maybe it is with the familiarity to Vilma Santos or Angel Locsin; or maybe a cancer patient suddenly turning a new leaf after knowing that she has only a few weeks to live. It is probably the latter. Vilma Santos tries to pull off an over-the-top over-privilege high-society career woman but, it rather than be taken seriously it seems like she is like a caricature of the real thing; a cartoon baddie that is aching to be reform by our super heroine, Darna... I mean Angel. Now that I mentioned it, both these actress have played the role of Darna in some point of their careers: Vilma Santos played Darna in film reiteration of Mars Ravelo's character with Darna and the Giants (1973), Lipad Darna Lipad (1973), Darna Vs. the Planetwoman (1975), and Darna at Ding (1980); while Angel Locsin played the titular role in the GMA Network's 2005 'fantaserye', Darna.

Everything about Her 2016 Star Cinema drama featuring Angel Locsin as Jaica, nurse to cancer patient Vilma Santos

Going back, the familiarity of the premise of someone who is initially vile at first but eventually change in the course of the film has been done in most films; it's called character development. Obviously there is no other route for Vilma but to soften up her comical villainy and you have a similarly comical nurse for that in the form of Angel Locsin who falls in love with the neglected son of Vilma. This is where the next familiar trope comes the condescending monster in-law like theme which eventually warms up to the daughter in law through a series of events that would bring them closer and in this film, it is the indefinite fatality of Vilma. One can already give two possible outcomes for this, the miraculous good ending or not. Still Angel and xian would end up together. I could be wrong, but this is just a 'wild' guess. But it could very well be something worthwhile especially as you have a top-billed actress (Vilma Santos) playing an unconventional role. That is probably worth seeing.

Si Agimat Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako 2012 MMFF entry about Enteng Kabisote (Vic Sotto) teaming up again with Agimat (Bong Revilla Jr) with a new fairy heroine named Ako (Judy Ann Santos) against a giant octopus-like alien

It seems to be a tradition now, every Metro Manila Film Festival must include a Shake, Rattle, & Roll or an Enteng Kabisote title and don't get me wrong most Filipino film audience likes these annual installments. I just somehow find the (Enteng Kabisote) franchise uninspired now. A series which could expand the lore of its magical land but still maintaining its humor and charm, but instead creates unnecessary crossovers, out of their own universe set of villains to even immortal villains, and usually preachy film about what is moral and what is not. December 25, is also a holiday and day for the whole family and what we have learned with past Enteng Kabisote films is that it is going to be yet another blockbuster hit thanks to the marketing by both Eat Bulaga, the station it is under which is also a partner of the creation of this title, GMA Films; and Judy ann santos on her home station in ABS-CBN. The idea of an having future Enteng Kabisote MMFF entry with Bong Revilla, Jr. (Agimat), and Ai-Ai de las Alas (Tanging Ina) with Judy Ann Santos Ako again seems not too impossible after the success of this film. If you want the the Enteng Kabisote film series to drag/continue with this possibility, then go check it out when it hits the theaters on December 25, 2012.

My Househusband, Ikaw Na!
Plot / Synopsis

When Rod (Ryan Agoncillo), a father of two decided to quit his job, his wife (Judy Ann Santos) eventually decides to pursue a life of a career woman. As if this arrangement was not difficult enough (for an ordinary middle class Filipino family) for the two loving couple, a new neighbor (Eugene Domingo) comes along which may possibly put the couple's marriage to the test. That plus the malicious rumors spread by neighbors and the meddlesome relatives of each party. Thus the comedy ends and the family drama begins.

My Househusband, Ikaw Na! Trailer Review

Filipinos have a strong affiliation and love to their families. So when you put two highly a list of highly acclaimed and adored actors into a film about family, then that is one perfect mix of a Metro Manila Film Fest Entry this 2011.

my househusband ikaw na starring judy ann santos ryan agoncillo eugene domingo metro manila film festival 2011

The trailer is pretty much straightforward, husband loses job, wife gets an executive position, and the couple struggle with the arrangement not usually seen on traditional Filipino families. You can obviously tell where the drama would come from the trailer alone... via its meddlesome relatives (which has always been the case for most Filipino families). But that is what Filipino movie goers like... the reality of married life; and the the joys and complications that goes with it. Thanks to the real life chemistry of Judy Ann and Ryan, plus the funny and lovable aura of Ms. Eugene Domingo the movie trailer is just oozing with appeal. But do not let the humor shown in the trailer fool you as it could just hide a more heavy drama inside it. A very easy recommendation for Pinoy Movie Blogger.

Enteng ng Ina Mo Trailer Review

We somehow had it coming when the Enteng Kabisote franchise started to feature a character outside of its universe with Agimat last 2010. This 2011, Star Cinema, M-Zet TV Productions, APT Entertainment Production and Octo Arts Films made it happen, another Enteng Kabisote movie crossover. Featuring the mega-movie that everyday ordinary Filipino masses have been praying for since the very beginning, a movie starring the Metro Manila Film Festival Blockbuster King Vic Sotto and Comedy Queen Ai Ai delas Alas.

enteng ng ina mo 2011 mmff entry comedy movie crossover

Enteng ng Ina Mo has the best of both worlds, well the latest from those worlds. Don't expect Christine Hermosa (Enteng Kabisote) or Heart Evangelista (Tanging Ina Mo) in this film. The characters featured in this film are taken from the both of the film franchise's last films, but it doesn't take anything away from it. As long as you have Vic Sotto, Jose Manalo, Ai Ai delas Alas and Eugene Domingo then you are usually guaranteed with laugh out loud moments; and effective writing I just hope that the MMFF 2011 crossover title will have decent writing in it. We are not really watching it for the special effects, but for the humor. I hope they flesh out a little more of Enkantasya on this one. The trailer made me smile a bit, so that should count for something. Knowing the humor of Tanging Ina; and the usually slapstick and "sexual innuendo-filled" comedy of Enteng Kabisote (and this is supposed to be a family film), we can expect a perfect blend of comedy (or an awful horrendous mix) this Metro Manila Film Festival. One thing is certain though, that Enteng ng Ina Mo will definitely be another blockbuster success (in terms of sales).

Gulliver's Travels (2010) Movie Review

Gulliver's Travels is a comedy adventure film loosely based on a 18th-century fantasy novel of the same name. Though I have vivid recollections of what the original story is like, all I can say is that this new spin-off of the classic Gulliver's Travels is an entertaining voyage amidst a seemingly deadly rapids of critics negative reception of the film. Here is what Pinoy Movie Blogger thinks of Gulliver's Travels.

Gulliver's Travels Movie Poster

Gulliver's Travels Movie Review
Pinoy Movie Blogger Reviews

The film does not claim that it is a movie that directly adapts the Jonathan Swift's classic Gulliver's Travels, so expect the unexpected as this modern adaptation deviates from its origin and transforms into something bite size comedic film that you either hate or love. Throw Jack Black into the picture and what you will be getting is just that. Though it would be very informative and entertaining to watch a film adaptation that is very close to its classic novel roots, you won't have that opportunity in this movie. A more family friendly comedy adventure featuring Jack Black's brand of humor as you've always seen him in films like in 2003's School of Rock and the 2009 video game Brutal Legends.

Though I may favor the films humor most of the times which can range from okay to outrageous, it can't hide the fact that there are missed opportunities for the film to effectively use the original novel's chapter to further develop its characters and progress its story. One good example is the scene in the Island of the Giants (Brobdingnag) which is shrunk down to mere scenes of awkwardness with a few chuckles on the side but no further exploration whatsoever. The scenes in Brobdingnag can just take place anywhere and the effect would still be the same. Lemuel Gulliver's character development may feel a bit rush but how long should the transition from being a self-serving loser and lier into a noble hero take anyways? I just wished it was given more emphasis together in Brobdingnag.

Gulliver's Travels' visual graphics are okay. With some nice looking CGI effects (e.g. robot controlled by the main antagonist) with some minor flaws in chroma keying, but doesn't take away too much. The film is also nice to watch in 3-D though I don't the same entertainment value in watching it in ordinary theaters. The film has nice sound and musical scoring which features some retro and rock music.

PMB Recommendation
The Verdict

Not being overly exposed to too much on brand of American comedy has its perks, because I can't help but laugh out loud Gulliver's Travels humor and awkwardness; that or maybe I just like Jack Black's brand of humor. If you are looking for a funny film this weekend and like a Jack Black film, you might want to try Gulliver's Travel's with friends or together with the entire family. There is also a bonus Ice Age short which you will surely love, "Scrat's Continental Crack-up".

This is why Pinoy Movie Blogger gives Gulliver's Travels a three out of five video game guitars.

Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote (2010) Movie Review

Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote, features two box office kings (Vic Sotto and Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr.) is one of the biggest Metro Manila Film Festival movie tie-up for the year which transcended to a box office success. Does "Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote" blockbuster success means that it is a similarly good film? That and many more is what you can find out in the Pinoy Movie Blogger Review on Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote.

Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote Synopsis
Film Premise

After chasing a monster from his realm, Agimat (Bong Revilla) ends up in Engkantasya where he encounters Enteng Kabisote. They later teamed up to chase the same monster which escaped to the human world (Enteng Kabisote's world) to avoid the chaos that the monster might cause to the humans. Enteng Kabisote series' main villain Satanna has once again resurfaced to revive another diabolic villain from the world of Agimat. The two villains then abducted the loved ones of Agimat and Enteng to make them fight each other.

Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote Movie Review
Pinoy Movie Blogger Reviews

Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote is generally an Enteng Kabisote film with a special participation of Agimat, or more likely Bong Revilla in a Vic Sotto film. Okay Ka, Fairy Ko (both the television and film series) and Enteng Kabisote (film franchise) have created and established a colorful and magical world of fairies, magic, family life and epic adventures which is a perfect set up to put similar character like Agimat. I have seen past Imus Production Films which usually features Bong Revilla as its main protagonist. It can easily be noticed that most of the Imus Productions entries wanted to attract most of the Filipino movie going audience but usually fails unlike its fellow MMFF competitor, the Enteng Kabisote film series. Thanks to longer airtime in Eat Bulaga, the film is properly marketed which would later reflect in ticket sales. So it is only natural that the team up of the two past Metro Manila Film Festival box office kings would yield favorable results. Besides this analysis what else can "Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote" has to offer?

In pursuit of a monster, Agimat crossed dimensions which transported him to Engkantasya where Enteng also ended up to search for his wife. The rest unfolded itself in a mediocre fashion but tries to project an epic adventure feel to the entire film. Not to be mistaken for an Enteng Kabisote movie all throughout, some scenes deviate from the comedic nature of the Enteng Kabisote universe which was achieved by focusing more on Agimat’s more dramatic and action-pack heavier nature. This uneven separation and focus of the two separate characters sometimes feel forced which might hurt the overall feel to the film.

The humor is a mixture of slapstick and situational comedy. Some of its humor also makes reference to segments and personalities of Eat Bulaga (the longest running noontime show in the Philippines) which may not usually appeal to some selected movie goers. There are also scenes having sexual innuendos; blood, gore and violence which goes against the target audience it generally wants to cater, the entire family.

The CGI and special effects range from okay to horrendous which one can easily notice on film trailer alone. That particular scene is Agimat dodging a CGI double edged axe thrown at him. Some visual effects set pieces looks okay but other pieces really look artificial and out of place. The graphics is not the main focus of the film and luckily it didn't for it would ruin the entire film. With big production studios backing up the biggest Metro Manila Film Festival team up pf the year, one would have thought that the film would have at least tried to invest more on a better and more realistic visual effects, but sadly "Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote" didn't which is such a waste of opportunity. Another headache inducing effects is the constant slowdown and speed ups effects on all action sequences which gets tiring and irritating early in the movie and drags it along until the end.

I have seen all of the Enteng Kabisote film series, thus I should gave it a more favorable review (for a possibility of being labeled as an avid fan or sort), but as they say with age comes wisdom and Enteng Kabisote could no longer hide its mediocre nature. Even if it adds up another character or an entire film franchise under its title, there will come a time that it gets really tiring and that time is now. An Enteng Kabisote film is no longer enough to satisfy more critical Filipino film fans looking for quality and content. Enteng Kabisote is a film franchise that has been milked so many times that there is nothing new that it can offer. Rather than exploring the rich magical world of Engkantasya which has repetitively teased the moviegoers on glimpse of its entirety on past Okay Ka Fairy Ko and Enteng Kabisote series, the film simply focuses more on just the same repetitive villains and set pieces. But if you are looking for a more relax film with general appeal and familiarity with the characters (actors) and a film that doesn't take itself too seriously, then Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote will do just fine but PMB barely recommends it.

PMB Recommendations for Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote
The Verdict

Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote is your average Vic Sotto film with Bong Revilla as an added character. I really want to give this a favorable review but the film just won't allow me. The film is not really that bad and you might get a laugh or two from a trusted and proven formulaic humor, a sometimes forced moral values but this can’t hide a weak plot, poor character development, a frustrating CGI and visual effects, and various plot holes.

If you prefer quality over just big names and collaborations, then you are better off looking for other MMFF entries and believe me when I say there are far superior MMFF entries than this. Though it generally appeals to the Filipino movie going audience by mixing recognized box office MMFF names, Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote falls short and fails to deliver a more engaging storyline, character development and an epic adventure. It maybe a box office success in terms of ticket sales but don't expect something phenomenal on this film. Rather than milking a Filipino pop culture television and movie series (the Okay Ka Fairy Ko and the Enteng Kabisote film series), the production should take this challenge to create a more engaging story, better visual and special effects, in-depth character developmen without loosing the appeal it has established.

This is why The Pinoy Movie Blogger gives "Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote" a similarly frustrated rating of one and a half out of a perfect five "Agimat" medallion. A first low rating in Pinoy Movie Blogger Reviews.
