Plot / Synopsis

Nilalang tells the story of Tony (played by Cesar Montano), an NBI agent investigating a series of rapes and killings that counts, among them, Tony’s girlfriend. With his co-agent, Jane, they follow leads that take them to a meeting with Miyuki (Maria Ozawa), the daughter of Mr. Kazudo who is an elder member of the Yakuza. Together, they come face-to-face with an enemy that transcends time; and leaves a trail of mindless, cold-blooded crime at its wake.

So what can we say about the Nilalang official trailer? Well besides the obvious fact that it is an action horror film official MMFF 2015 entry featuring Maria Ozawa on it, Nilalang is a breathe of fresh air in a sense that we haven't seen that many local action horror films that has this kind of cinematography and actually be what it says it would; a high-octane action film. Well, we don't say that there aren't any. There aren't that many as much as RomComs do. The films usually featuring E.R. Ejercito are a good example of these contemporary action films, but they give more of a special kind of vibe to it; a vibe of a more biographical or artistic tone to in, than action.


Let me commend the marketers for Nilalang as they've released the official trailer for Nilalang this October which will be enough time to help create enough buzz and discussion for this film. The early worm catches the worm, right? This is film marketing done right. The Nilalang trailer shows the "wonderful" script used in the film like "Hindi matatapos, kung warang tatapos" and nope that wasn't a typo. It puzzles me as to why should the Japanese characters use Filipino when conversing with each other or when they address Cesar Montano to whom is shown to have a certain degree of proficiency in the Japanese language. It just feels pretentious or fake at best. Another observation is that shot with Maria Ozawa shooting like crazy as I find it rather weak. As the film portray her at being a bad ass, that scene was sure made her like a clueless member of Yakuza who can't handle a gun. Hopefully the film will not be riddled so much by the things we can observed in the trailer as it may negatively affect it. Don't give me started with Nilalang's title card. We get it, the film features Japanese and Filipino talent and settings, no need to pound it in with a Japanese-themed font. Try thinking about this, a high octane Japanese film with partnership between Japan and the Philippines,and the film title has a Filipino salakot (traditional wide-brimmed hat from the Philippines) just to make sure that there are Filipinos in the film. Isn't that a bit redundant? Amidst such nitpicks, Nilalang has somewhat piqued my curiosity as I want to find out what kind of monster is this Zahagur, the film refer to its villain.

Manny Pacquaio aficionado rejoice this one is for you. Many have cheered on the 8-time division boxing world champion Manny Pacquaio while he is on the ring, now it is time to tell the story before he was even known as one. As if we have not have not enough of Manny Pacquiao, then Kid Kulafu comes along...


Kid Kulafu as a trailer looks sick. Everything what need to know about Kid Kulafu film and the life of Manny Pacquaio is on this trailer; like how he carry a heavy sack as practice, how he punch sand bags for practice, how he shadow box for practice, and wait for it... his boxing matches. Well I usually tend to complain a lot when a film gives everything away leaving nothing to the imagination in their trailers, so this is actually quite refreshing. Either it was the original intention or there isn't anything good to show; hopefully it is the former than the latter. For those unfamiliar with the Filipino celebrity starring in this biographical film, we can say that the film puts an effort to get good actors with award-winning Cesar Montano and Alessandra de Rossi. Buboy Villar has been usually cast to a kid's or side role in various television shows most notably Darna, Dyesebel, Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan. He has appeared in some film title but nothing that would showcase his true talents as an actor, bso this is his biggest break and why I think he puts quite a lot of effort in it. One can even think that he went into extensive method acting to pull off such scenes. Either that or he has a good boxing trainer/choreographer and he simply is simply good at acting. Seeing him in the trailer convinces me that he is a good pick for the role of the young Manny Pacquiao. We'll see once Kid Kulafu hits theater this 2015.

El Presidente, the first true-to-life full-length film of General Emilio Famy Aguinaldo (1869-1964), tells the story of the man behind the legend, from the time he led the resistance against two superpowers: the first against Spain, that led to the inauguration of the first democratic republic in Asia; and the second against the United States of America, which changed the destiny of a nation.

The story not only touches on the political in-fighting and intrigues that took place during the revolution, it also explores the inner struggles of Emilio Aguinaldo as husband and father, as well as the agonizing moments of making life-or-death decisions in the interest of security and national unity.

The Filipino movie going audience will be in for a treat this coming 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (2012 Metro Manila Film Festival) with El Presidente. The upcoming bioepic film that dabbles in the life, struggles, and controversy of the first president of the Republic of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo. El Presidente has a very impressive and star-studded cast who will all bring and flesh out the life of one of Philippine's historical figure. The film is created by the same people who brought us the 2011 MMFF entry Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story and the reason why we have Mr. Estrada (currently 49 years of age) portraying as the youngest and first Filipino president General Emilio Aguinaldo (28 years old).

The contrast of the lead star's age against the historical figure he portrays can probably be set aside if you look at the how beautiful the film looks on the film. It is a no-brainer that this film could very well be on the top list of the candidate for best picture this coming Metro Manila Film Festival. Hopefully the film won't excessively depend of CGI effects like what is seen on the canon ball view as it plunged through unknowing soldiers. I also have some issue with the slow-down and speed-up moments when they are going all out in the war. I hope that this is just some effects on the trailer and that the film doesn't also excessively use such "stylistic" film effects. An issue that the film could raise is the controversy between the relationship between Emilio Aguinaldo and Andres Bonifacio. Well of course the film is highly dramatized to an epic scale, but will it actually be historically accurate? If it does, will it be lenient to the story as told by the Aguinaldo clan? Then it might do an injustice to the Bonifacio clan? Will the film feature what has been kept in the historical books and show the evil of Philippine politics? That is what we can look forward to in this biopic of Emilio Aguinaldo this Metro Manila Film Festival.

Biktima Trailer Impressions: Hell Hath no Fury like a Woman Scorned

Biktima is an upcoming suspense thriller drama film under Star Cinema and Alba Productions under the direction of R.D. Alba which stars Cesar Montano, Angel Aquino, Mercedes Cabral, Sunshine Cruz, Ricky Davao, Scarlet, JM Ibañez, Disi Alba, Lloyd Samartino, and Rommel Montano slated for an September 19, 2012 nationwide theatrical release. Biktima was an independent film written by Rey Cuerdo and R.D. Alba which was released back in 2011. Let's check out this 2011 drama film picked up by Star Cinema for a nationwide theatrical release.

Alice de la Cruz (Angel Aquino) is a TV field reporter. But when she gets the dangerous assignment to cover kidnappings in the island of Kamandao, she takes the opportunity for this might be her big break. Her husband Mark(Cesar Montano) does not agree with this assignment that she took. He warns her of how risky it is to go to the island. Alice takes the chance anyway and that was the last time Mark has seen Alice.

Sandra Guzman (Mercedes Cabral), a lounge singer who has just moved into town eventually got involved with Mark. Later Alice eventually resurfaced along with the trauma of her captivity. How we'll everything fall back into its previous place when her Alice sanity is in question and her family has seem moved on and has won over by her best friend.

Biktima Film Trailer Review

Star Cinema is really doing some pretty impressive stuff lately. This time the ABS-CBN film production picks up an independent title and gives it a nationwide theatrical release which is not really new to the industry. Star cinema did the same with Ang Babae sa Spetic Tank. Well, this time it is with Biktima.

I haven't seen the film on its independent film release, which is such a shame and the biggest fault of good films being indies. I really wish that mainstream Filipino film studios will just re-release successful indie titles for most of us who failed to see them on their initial limited run. I have seen films that tackled the same theme as Biktima, but not on a local level. Well, maybe there might be more but chances are they are independent titles which limits most of us (especially in the provice) to have the chance to actually see them. Since Biktima is now set to be released as a mainstream film, it is probably one of the first few movies that actually has something to say and convey rather than pointless love stories and cheap horror scares. The cinematography looks nice from the trailer and the plot is decent. The film looks initially like a drama film, but later add something more in the end. Biktima seems to redefine the idiom "Hell has no fury like a woman scorned". When the everyone already thinks that you are already dead and have moved on, how can you pick up the pieces when you return? How can you do it when you are broken yourself? I think this is a decent film with a very relevant theme. If you want a film that deals with terrorism and its effects and of what is it like to be someone who have experienced a traumatic experience, then you can check out Biktima this September 2012 in theaters near you.

Hitman Trailer Impressions: Helping Out with the the Revival Action Film Genre?

Hitman is a 2012 action film from Viva Films and CM Productions starring Cesar Montano, Philip Salvador, and Sam Pinto. After the reaction to Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story last 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival, it looks like Film Studios mainly Viva Films finally realize that there is still something about action films after all. Cesar Montano himself has made it his mission and stated that he wants to revive the action film genre starting this year, first with Hitman.
