A Lotto Like Love
Plot / Synopsis

On the far side of being ambitious is Kayela, a go-getter woman whose goal in life is to be rich. She’s the kind of dreamer who has started acting rich even before being one. On the other end of the spectrum is Itot, a handsome and hard-working cab driver who just wants to provide for his disabled mother and teenage brother’s everyday needs. Their worlds had nothing to do with each other until they both cue up in the same lottery line to buy lotto tickets.

Being the people person that she is, Kayela manages to involve Itot in choosing the numbers she’d bet on. She even gets to borrow money from him upon realizing that she does not have enough money to buy a lotto ticket. Itot wants nothing in return but to get rid of this woman who’s slowing down the lotto line.

Everything changes when Itot falls in dire financial need and Kayela wins the lottery. Itot hunts Kayela and demands that she shares her prize with him, to which Kayela eventually agrees. Just when the two are about to claim the prize, 2 hold-uppers attempt to take Kayela’s bag where the winning ticket is kept. Instead of giving the bag to the thieves, Kayela throws it inside a moving bus. The hold-uppers did not pursue her bag anymore. However, it is now Kayela and Itot’s turn to chase it back.

This propels the series of their adventures and mishaps, ultimately leading them to discover their priceless worth to each other.

A Lotto Like Love Film Trailer Review

A Lotto Like Love 2016 CineFilipino Film Festival entry written and directed by Carla Baful starring romantic comedy featuring Martin Escudero and Isabelle de Leon finding love when winning lotto ticket went missing

What can be said about the A Lotto Like Love (2016) official movie trailer? 'A Lotto Like Love' is much closer to home than the rest of the CineFilipino Film Festival entries. It is close in the sense that it is just right along the many romantic comedies that has over-saturated the mainstream Filipino film industry. The premise isn't something new either as it follows the generic two highly unlikely individuals paired together by one common bizarre circumstance that brings them closer together and this time the lotto ticket. It has all the markings of the usual romcom fest found on Star Cinema or GMA Films; it gives off a vibe of a GMA Films romcom which is usually subpar compared to Star Cinema quality romcoms.

A Lotto Like Love 2016 CineFilipino Film Festival entry written and directed by Carla Baful starring romantic comedy featuring Martin Escudero and Isabelle de Leon love team

A Lotto Like Love features some bizarre situations and over-the-top characters which might make you re-evaluate if this is really grounded to reality or fiction. Maybe I am just not the target demographic of the film and more of the young adults and female demographic. A Lotto Like Love has your typical over-the-top over achieving female lead with a seemingly clueless guy but amidst their differences they will find love. This time no diabolical villains like condescending parents to stop them from pursuing love, but there seems to be a love triangle. Maybe it is 'different' from the mainstream romcoms in a sense that it lacks that usual element that challenges the featured pair in these kinds of film, but who knows. If you are looking for something that brngs out the "kilig" factor, then A Lotto Like Love might probably be up your alley. 1st Sem 2016 CineFilipino Film Festival featuring Lotlot De Leon as a loving mother frustrated at her son played by Darwin Yu for not going to college because of separation anxiety

What can be said about the 1st Sem (2016) official movie trailer? Well it starts out endearing but the latter half shows the film's plot of dealing with separation anxiety caused by the dependency to one's family; a close familial tie. The film may also tackle the problem with complacency and comfort zones which is really kind of fresh and we don't usually tackled in mainstream Filipino films. So far this has been really the edge with the movies under the CineFilipino feature length category.

Ang Taba Ko Kasi Film Trailer Review

What can be said about the Ang Taba Ko Kasi (2016) official movie trailer? Well, 'Ang Taba Ko Kasi' features something not so often featured in mainstream films, a shift of focus on the life of the 'fat' lady; usually the side character or punch line. The CineFilipino film picks up the pink elephant in the room, of the life, prejudice, stigma, and how ruthless most society can become when dealing with those they deemed not beautiful; how they deal with fat people. The interesting part in the trailer is that it also include a scene wherein the female lead has also the same toxic mentality alienating and dismissing her (possible) love interest merely because it is fat. A similar disheartening notion as LGBT members believing that they do should never have the same equal rights for legal civil union or marriage.

Ang Taba Ko Kasi 2016 CineFilipino Film Festival entry about a love story of a fat woman falling in love with a physically fit man Cai Cortez, Ryan Yllana, and Mark Neumann love triangle

I remember watching an old American film about a similar film, the 1989 film Babycakes. Well, Babycakes seems to still romanticize and play more on the unlikely protagonist wins over the guy, or in this case the good-looking guy. You can check out the Babycakes trailer here. You might very well search and watch the whole film on Youtube if you are lucky.

Ang Taba Ko Kasi Jason Paul Laxamana's 2016 CineFilipino Film Festival entry featuring Cai Cortez and Ryan Yllana

In an interesting turn of events, the Movie and Television Review Classification Board (MTRCB) has slapped an 'x' rating on the 'Ang Taba Ko Kasi' movie trailer due to 'strong offensive language/insult on the appearance of a person.' It is quite absurd really as to how else can a movie show the life and the ordeal experience by the fat people if the film and its trailer are not allowed to show such harsh realities. It is probably not the film's intention to make a mockery or insult onto something that they seem to focus on; to give a thought-provoking narrative and make people realize and re-evaluate as to how they perceive and define 'beauty. This is one of the few moments, when you really question the competency and relevance of the MTRCB.You can check out the Ang Taba Ko Kasi official Facebook Page as to see which theaters will screen the film, schedule, and other details.

Star na si Van Damme Stallone CineFilipino 2016 entry drama comedy film Candy Pangilinan plays a loving mother to a child with down syndrome Paolo Pingol and Jadford Dilanco

Spanning more than two decades of personal accounts, this story offers vignettes of Vanvan’s life through the eyes of the people closest to him: his mother Nadia when he was a newborn and the story of how he got his unique name; his brother Tano during his childhood, when he got his first lead role and gave it up for the sake of the ‘greater good’; his uncle Jim when he reached his teenage years and began making his acting career happen; and his own perspective as an adult when he finally, in a manner of speaking, became a full-pledged TV personality.

Star na si Van Damme Stallone CineFilipino 2016 drama comedy movie featuring actors with down syndrome Paolo Pingol and Jadford Dilanco as its lead protagonist

What can be said about the Star na si Van Damme Stallone (2016) official movie trailer? Well, it really looks interesting and good. The Facebook page information about the film's genre is categorized as a light, heartwarming, drama, comedy film in which I think delivers from this trailer alone. There is something about this film that made me smile and sad at the same time which I can probably attribute to the film featuring and focusing on two talents with down syndrome, Paolo Pingol and Jadford Dilanco.

Star na si Van Damme Stallone CineFilipino 2016 drama comedy film about a loving mother's dream of fulfilling the dreams of his kid with down syndrome Candy Pangilinan's stellar performance

There is something in me that say that this is somehow a cheap way to win the hearts of the potential movie audience, but there is a part of me that says that I am glad that the film used REAL people with disability; a movie about down syndrome performed by real people with down syndrome. This is probably why its movie audience will oversee the 'acting' of the individuals with down syndrome and look at the bigger picture of it, a mothers love for her son no matter whatever condition he has; to support and make his dream come true no matter the odds. I just feel that the trailer may have shown more than it should. Well, it did show who the main protagonist wants to have as a leading lady, so that has somehow spoiled the reveal. I wish a more properly cut trailer that teases rather than spoil the major plot points has been considered. It is a good thing that this trailer set me in a good mood as these kinds of things usually agitates me. With that small nitpick, I still think that it is highly worth the see.

Straight to the Heart Film Trailer Review

Straight to the Heart 2016 CineFilipino Film Festival movie title card Carl Guevara as gay hairdresser turned straight and Gwen Zamora as the lesbian Jeans

What can be said about the 'Straight to the Heart' (2016) official movie trailer? Well, it looks like an entertaining film that plays up with the usual amnesiac plot found in most films with a little deviation; a gay turning straight thanks (or no thanks) to amnesia. Amidst the comedic presentation, the trailer also featured some interesting dramatic moments and surprisingly a straight love story(?).

Straight to the Heart 2016 CineFilipino comedy movie about a gay turning into straight because of amnesia and gay friends dealing with the change

Hopefully the film doesn't focus much on the gay loudmouth stereotypical and actually explore the plight of everyday members of the LGBT community. To at least talk about some serious issues amidst the cliche amnesia and comedic presentation. I think it is alright to set one's expectation higher than usual on this one. It is after all, a CineFilipino Film Festival official entry to the featured film category. A film competition with a main selling point of funding, creating, awarding, and celebrating good quality Filipino films. While not really revolutionary at a first glance, 'Straight to the Heart' raises up (my) curiosity. Is the protagonist better off as gay or straight? What will happen to the seemingly romance being built between the amnesiac protagonist and his lesbian friend? How will the story unfold and the outcome. There are a number of ways that this could end, but this time rather than making a guess, the trailer piqued my curiosity. It made me think how well this film journey will unfold before reaching its destination.
