Gitling 2023 drama film about a Japanese director and his female translator submitting a film in the Bacolod film festival

In a surprising twist, a young Filipina translator and a Japanese director push the boundaries of language and uncover the joy of comprehension during an unlikely period: when they work on adding subtitles to his movie in Ilonggo (a local Filipino dialect). Together, they hurry to complete the task before the film's big debut at the Bacolod Festival. Little did they expect that their teamwork would unveil the true beauty of understanding and the immense power of language and connection.

Gitling Cinemalaya Film Trailer Review

Gitling 2023 drama film and 19th Cinemalaya independent film festival title featuring Gabby Padilla and Ken Yamamura

What can be said about the Gitling (2023) official movie trailer? I am loving the line-up of Cinemalaya 2023 thus far, this time, Gitling is set outside Metro Manila; showcasing the beauty of the City of Smiles, Bacolod. This time around it is a story of two unlikely individuals working together with a common goal in mind, translating the Japanese filmmaker's language to Ilonggo and submitting it in a local film festival. Earlier press releases (synopsis) shared online stated that the female lead character cancelled her wedding engagement, and the film trailer seemingly alludes to this when they talk about the finality of marriages. I don't know if this is also what the theme of the film by the Japanese director is all about, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Gitling 2023 drama film featuring Gabby Padilla as a film transalor who cancelled her wedding engagement

Gitling feels melancholic from this trailer. And with a topic of marriage being seen in a more negative tone it is not surprising. The big question is will this somber tone take a more positive turn. Will Gitling be a romance in the making for the two unlikely leads; or just two professionals finding camaraderie and friendship from their working experience. I find the premise interesting and as it feels a bit meta, i.e., being a film about film-making and submitting it to a local film festival. I am looking forward to how the film will use Bacolod and the dialect to convey the budding connection for the two lead. I like this kind of mystery on the film's trailer rather than a two minute-long trailer that basically spoils most of the major beats of the film it should supposed to tease. The simple synopsis for the entries in Cinemalaya 2023.

Suddenly It's Magic
Plot / Synopsis

Joey Hermosa (Erich Gonzales) and Marcus Hanson (Mario Maurer) only have two things in common.

One: they live to make fairy-tale romances happen -- Joey through her exquisite wedding cakes; Marcus through the numerous romantic comedies he stars in.

Two: their own love stories do not have the fairy-tale happy endings -- she was just recently dumped at the altar; he just discovered that his on-screen partner and real-life girlfriend had fallen in love with another man.

These two broken-hearted people will find love again when they least expect it. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a sweet ever after!

Desperate to escape the media frenzy and the intrusive questions of the public about his love life and career, Marcus impulsively decides to go on vacation in the Philippines where he meets Joey who is determined to move forward with her life. Marcus finds himself drawn to Joey's passion for baking, and rediscovers his love for acting. In love once again, he invites her to join him in Thailand. Joey refuses at first, but she eventually follows him to Bangkok and allows herself to fall in love again. But their love encounters opposition from Marcus' fans who are desperate to see him reunite with his ex-girlfriend, and from his overprotective mother. Moreover, Joey's responsibilities back home cause a strain in their relationship. Despite their love for each other, Joey and Marcus begin to question if their dreams are worth sacrificing for holiday romance suddenly turned serious.

Can Marcus and Joey's fairytale romance survive life's realities?

Suddenly It's Magic Film Trailer Review

Star Cinema is at it again with another romantic film with Suddenly It's Magic. This time they added a special foreign element to add to the charm of the film with Thailand's heartrob Mario Maurer who has been known for his 2007 film "The Love of Siam" and 2010 sleeper hit "First Love" (A Little Thing Called Love).

Suddenly It's Magic 2012 romantic Philippine movie starring Mario Maurer from Thailand and Erich Gonzales about people from two different worlds actor and baker

The two lead amidst the language barrier seems to register good on-screen and fans from both countries would sure be delighted to see this cute team up on the big screen. There is really nothing new about the story of the film, two people from completely different world's falling in love and enduring the hardships that come with their seemingly complicated love affair. Well this is what the synopsis from Star Cinema has featured on their official FB Page. I usually am pretty irritated with these kinds of synopsis but seeing that it is what is shown in the trailer, so I'll let it pass. Star Cinema and Romantic film junkies will definitely see this film and there is no stopping them. Will it be another blockbuster is the big question.
