Mary Cherry Chua 2023 filipino horror movie ouija board scene

What can be said about the Mary Cherry Chua (2023) official movie trailer? As a big horror movie fan, the premise isn't that revolutionary but it would be interesting to see a popular Filipino urban legend get another big screen adaptation. What is interesting about urban legends is how familiar yet unknown they are. You may hear that it originated at a particular school, but later found out that it isn't. That almost every school has its own version of Mary cherry Chua, just like how every school was once claimed to be a burial grounds or cemetery.

Mary Cherry Chua 2023 filipino horror film adaptation of a filipino urban legend about a slain student haunting school ground

What is interesting is that I am not even familiar with Mary Cherry Chua's urban legend. What I am familiar with is the concept of haunted school grounds and lingering restless spirits haunting people within it. One can say it is a tried and tested formula while others may say it is a tired cliche as well. The only difference is that this time you just have fresh faces or talenst from Viva Films this 2023 acing along with veteran performers like Joko Diaz, Alma Moreno, and Rolando Inocencio. I think this urban legend can seamlessly be blended within one of the segment of a Shake, Rattle, & Roll (SRR) film; but I can also say that Filipino film production studios and creatives are running out of concepts to make for a compelling and noteworthy horror film because of horror franchises like SRR are using all the concept up. The same reason why Pridyider (2012) became its own supernatural horror title even if it was part of an episode of the original Shake, Rattle, & Roll (1984). Will Mary Cherry Chua be scary or engaging enough to justify its normal standalone Filipino film runetime or will it feel dragging and longer than it should. I guess, movie goers will know that once it premieres in cinemas nationwide.

Mano Po 7: Chinoy
Plot / Synopsis

Mano Po 7 Chinoy Regal Entertainment Inc 2016 family drama starring Enchong Dee, Jean Garcia, Janella Salvador, Richard Yap as a Filipino chinese family that has family issues

From the multi-awarded and longest running family drama movie comes another story in the tradition of love. Mano Po 7: Chinoy centers around the seemingly perfect upper class Chinese family which seems perfect at a first glance but is flawed as a whole. How will the family overcome its trials and tribulations?

Mano Po 7: Chinoy Film Trailer Review

Mano Po 7 2016 Regal Films family drama featuring a Filipino Chinese family - Enchong Dee, Jean Garcia, Janella Salvador, Richard Yap overcoming the lack of love in their upper class family

What can be said about Mano Po 7: Chinoy official movie trailer? Well, it is a family drama like many other that comes before it. It introduce us to a seemingly perfect upper class family but at a closer inspection is flawed in terms of love, connection, and lasting relationships. This is probably the main element of every family drama out there as without it there is no progression in story or characters. The earliest I can think of a family drama that garnered critical acclaim were "Tanging Yaman" and "Anak" both from the year 2000; if there are others, then I am (not) sorry as these newer family dramas probably didn't leave a lasting impact in the minds of the film going fans or forgettable at best; that or probably just me as I am not really into dramas nor I automatically subscribe to the notion that "drama = quality film". There is also something about the narration of this trailer wherein mentioning about "this is our story" and a "powerful drama" that somehow feels off, but I guess that is just me nitpicking. A trailer does need to say that it is not just any ordinary drama but a powerful drama! That it is OUR story given that we mostly belong to an upper class Chinese family, but I am digressing.

Mano Po 7 Chinoy 2016 family drama directed by Ian Loreños featuring Enchong Dee and Jessy Mendiola love team

Revisit a "new" family drama that shifts to a new Filipino -Chinese family and their struggles to love and understand each other and to recognize that money and work is not everything one need to have a happy family. Well, that seems to be the basic summary of most dramas that features a wealthy family. The Mano Po film franchise has somewhat demystify or further clarify what most Filipinos outside their world think of their culture, ethics, and mentality is. Since newer generations are introduced, the lines are starting to blur and what once was absolute in the Chinese culture have started to open up and this is what the Mano Po series have capitalized on in the past with a mix of the usual cliches like mistresses, the family against the relationship because of cultural differences (bloodline "purity"), social class differences, and lack of connection. To much of the people's surprise, Mano Po 7: Chinoy didn't make it on the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival which is really a curiosity. We can understand why Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers and The Super Parental Guardians didn't made it but Mao Po 7: Chinoy joining the other MMFF 2016 rejects is really something. We can all later compare if all the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival entries deserved their spots.

How about you guys? What do you think about this 2016 comeback film from the Mano Po film franchise? Have you seen the earlier Mano Po films? Which ones are your favorite and why? What do you think about Mano Po 7: Chinoy not being in the official entries to the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival? My Rebound Girl Film Trailer Review

My Rebound Girl 2016 Regal Films romcom starring Joseph Marco as Rich broken hearted and will fall in love with Rocky played by Alex Gonzaga

What can be said about My Rebound Girl's official movie trailer? My Rebound Girl is a romantic comedy film that once again tackles the cliched theme of being a "rebound", the only difference this time is that the film features Alex Gonzaga and Joseph Marco as its main lead with a look into the local coffee industry as its backdraft (as seen in its many promotional campaign materials online).

My Rebound Girl 2016 Regal Films romantic comedy film directed by Emmanuel Dela Cruz starring Joseph Marco and Alex Gonzaga about broken hearts, rebounds, and loving anew

Well, it is what it is. Romantic comedy films is the staple of in mainstream film industry in the Philippines. Another conveyor belt romantic film that is low budget and yet will probably yield a good amount of box office success, a "craft" and "practice" that has almost been perfected by Star Cinema. The only question now is will Regal Films emulate such success by being a more flexible studios that can advertise across various television networks (unlike Star Cinema that heavily and only rely on marketing therir films on a ridiculous level in its home network ABS-CBN)? Is deciding to go with Alex Gonzaga and Joseph Marco will attract the Star Cinema rom-com demographic to check this out?
